Help honor our U.S. active and retired military members on Sunday, May 27, 2012. Omaha’s German-American Society hosts this day-long event, FREE to military, with $5 donation to the Disabled American Veterans Association for others.
All U.S. Military organizations are invited to bring a banner, and as long as there is room on the walls, they will display the banners. This promises to be very impressive.
Doors open at 11:30 am, soon followed by an active duty Color Guard to present flags. Following will be great music (Duffy Belorad Orchestra and the Omaha Big Band), and, naturally, awesome food. On the menu: pulled pork, brats, hot dogs, cole slaw, American potato salad and fantastic apple pie.

This Saturday, 5/19/12, enjoy FREE admission to all Nebraska state parks, recreation areas and historical parks. Fish for FREE, too, with no fishing permit required in state parks and rec areas.

Today Nash Finch Co. markets announced a subsidiary bought out No Frills in Nebraska and Iowa. Sit tight to see what changes are coming.
You KNEW this was coming, right? A couple years back, Nash Finch bought out the Bag N Save markets in Omaha. Since then, BnS and No Frills have had identical promotions and discounts, and both carry Nash Brothers items. I’ve been waiting for Nash to announce a buyout.
When these purchases occur, it results in better buying power for the stores, and usually reduced cost to them. So we’ll see if the low prices will get lower or not, if the double coupons will be more often, or not at all, and if the product lines will change at all. And I’ll be real interested to see if there are any differences in store policies and customer service procedures.

Today 5/15/12, is primary election day. Whatever your party affiliation, or non-affiliation, as the case may be, get out and vote. There are a variety of elected positions to be filled, including some education board ones.
I know the polling places have changed. Mine did, and now you HAVE to drive to it, and it’s in a yukky, yukky place. But I did go vote. You should, too.

Looks like it’s going to get hot, and I mean in Omaha grocery competition. HyVee just distributed a coupon mailer with four fabulous coupons each week, May 16 through June 26. This Uber-sized mailer should be in your mailbox today or tomorrow, and the coupons are good at all Omaha and Papillion HyVees.

I learned how to use a machine at the age of 10, bought an old Singer for $10 and rewired it (sensing a frugal gene?). From there, I’m self-taught in a variety of techniques, media and machines. Some of the great things about having learned how to use my machine: my wardrobe and home have been awesome and relatively inexpensive; mending is sewing, and that comes in real handy; I worked my way through college costuming; I made a living at one time creating formal dresses.
